Dundee Sports Awards 2010
Dundee Sports Awards 2010
THE EVENT:
Following the cancellation of the 2010 Dundee Sports Awards due to the adverse weather conditions at the beginning of December, the event was rearranged and took place on Wednesday 23 February 2011 at the Invercarse Hotel, Dundee.
This was the 10th year of the Dundee Sports Awards and the event is the most prestigious of its kind in the city. The aim of the event is to recognise and reward the hard work, dedication and achievements of athletes, coaches, clubs and volunteers over the previous 12 months.
180 guests attended the event and in addition to the presentation of the 11 trophies, the guests were entertained by 2 guest speakers; Watt Nicoll, a motivational speaker who has worked with famous faces such as Wayne Rooney and David Beckham and; Scott Napier, a Fife cyclist who holds the world record for the fastest cycle of the Pan-American Highway.

A TRIBUTE TO JENNY WOOD ALLEN:
One of the highlights of the evening was the fantastic acceptance speech made by Ron McIntosh, winner of the Jenny Wood Allen Award. This was a fitting tribute following her death in December 2010:
"On chance o' winnin yon, Jenny Wood Allen Award, I thocht I'd better be, on my guard, This award means a gye lot tae me, Since I'm, a double amputee.
Jenny sadly passed away, on 30th December, A really great friend, wha I'll aye remember.
It wis, gye hard tae, hud back the tears, Jenny being, my great friend, for 26 years. For inspiration, I hidnae far, tae look, I just stole a leaf oot, o' Jenny's book.
Just deal we' whit life, throws at ye, was the message Jenny, passed tae me.
Jenny gave tae me, her ain secret code, 'keep right on to the end o' the road'.
Jenny's motto, 'whit er in life, ye happen tae face' 'aye try and strive, tae complete yer race'.
'See yer disability as a challenge to beat','even yon fowk, we nae leggies, or feet'.
It's ah the mair reason, tae try yer best, an put yersel, fully, tae the test.
Life is maist surely, oor best gift by far, said Jenny, thon great marathon star.
She thocht disability was, only a phrase, tae bear in mind, for a' yer days.
Each day o' yer life, never tak for granted, ye micht get a disability, ye never wanted.
Tae fellow disabled fowk, I offer a hand, tae be up there, we' the best in the land.
If yer confined tae a wheelchair, ner be depressed, ye kin still be up there, we' yon very best.
If ye belang Farfar, Arbroath, Dundee or Perth, be affy grateful, yer still here, on Earth.
Whar ain o' life's pleasure's, happended tae me, Befriendin, the late Jenny Wood Allen, MBE!"
The winners of the Jenny Wood Allen Award over the last 10 years has received a trophy donated by Jenny herself. As a mark of respect, Ron's name will be the last to be added to the trophy before it is donated to Dundee City Disability Sport, an association that Jenny worked with for many years. A new trophy will be purchased for the 2011 Dundee Sports Awards in memory of Jenny Wood Allen.
